As part of the Database SRE organization, I design and build automation platforms that improve the reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency of large-scale database infrastructure across ByteDance.

  • Led identification and classification of Tokopedia's L0 core links with RD and QA teams across Digital Goods, Homepage, PDP, Cart, Checkout, Order, Customer Service, Plus, and Bonus, then mapped service dependencies and entrance PSM SLAs.
  • Built SRE monitoring and alerting on Polaris, Grafana, Argos, and Triangle for 100% of L0 core links, standardizing metrics across four platforms into one view for RD, QA, and regional SRE teams.
  • Designed frontend journey monitoring with Firemap for Home, Cart, Checkout, PDP, registration, and login, combined with backend alarms to catch user-facing failures earlier.
  • Diagnosed a recurring forced-logout issue and created the monitoring and alerts to detect it before users reported it.
  • Delivered incident reliability metrics (incident distribution, recall rate, MTTD) to product teams, supporting zero P2+ incidents in Q4 2025 and shared 24/7 on-call across regional SRE teams.
  • Investigated and resolved a production payment-database failover caused by connection saturation and lock contention: traced the blocking chain, fixed pooling and transaction handling, and added safeguards against repeat incidents.
  • Owned datastore readiness for Tokopedia mega campaigns (Payday, Ramadhan, double dates): analyzed load test results, ran pre-event checklists (vacuum, scale-up), and stood by in war rooms. Reviewed 300+ databases ahead of events to handle 2x to 4x baseline traffic, sustaining 99.88% to 99.97% uptime across 2025 events.
  • Built a centralized Big Sales dashboard (ByteFaaS APIs over Elasticsearch and campaign DB queries) giving real-time visibility into sales performance and backend health during peak events.
  • Built a Python Risk Insight tool (Debezium connector monitoring, Lark bot alerts) and a Global Risk Governance dashboard on Triangle, and tagged Toko databases by criticality (P0/P1) across NDB, Redis, ByteES, and Abase.
  • Led the RDS-to-ByteNDB migration as Component SRE: wrote the SOP, executed cutovers, and decommissioned 155 legacy RDS components, cutting SQL cost by 94.2% (~$5.2K/day).
  • Tech Lead for Tokopedia's PostgreSQL-to-MySQL migration program following the ByteDance acquisition — co-designing migration architecture, engineering standards, automation ecosystem, and operational governance.
  • Designed heterogeneous migration architecture covering PostgreSQL, MySQL, Debezium, Kafka, CDC, rollback strategy, data type conversion, validation, and production cutover.
  • Built end-to-end automation for provisioning, migration validation, rollback, monitoring, and operational workflows.
  • Collaborated with Technical Architects on infrastructure topology, Terraform provisioning, Ansible deployment, and cost optimization.
  • Served as a technical approver during Infrastructure Go/No-Go decisions for production migration; mentored engineers and reviewed infrastructure pull requests.
  • Supported operation and reliability of ~408 production database clusters (PostgreSQL, MySQL, YugabyteDB).

Responsible for database platform reliability, migration engineering, and operational excellence supporting mission-critical production services — through the ByteDance acquisition and beyond.

  • Led multiple large-scale migration initiatives: Aliyun-to-GCP, PostgreSQL upgrades, YugabyteDB migration, and piloting ByteCloud migration.
  • Collaborated with ByteDance engineering teams during the post-acquisition technology transition — evaluating platforms, running proofs-of-concept, and shaping the PostgreSQL-to-MySQL migration strategy.
  • Designed high availability (HA) and replication architecture — keeping synchronized copies of data across multiple servers, so services stay online even when hardware fails.
  • Owned backup and restore strategy across the fleet — automated backups, integrity validation, and regularly tested restore drills, so business-critical data is always recoverable.
  • Maintained Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) readiness — standby infrastructure and failover procedures that keep the platform running even through a full data-center outage.
  • Performed query optimization and database performance tuning — turning slow queries into fast ones, so customer-facing services stay responsive during peak traffic events.
  • Designed monitoring standards, alerting improvements, and operational automation for provisioning, health checks, and migration workflows.
  • Delivered PCI DSS compliance initiatives by collaborating with auditors and engineering teams.
  • Owned incident response and root cause analysis across the fleet.

Engineering Principles

How I make migration decisions.

The same principles apply whether the cutover moves 4TB or 40TB.

01

Build Platforms, Not Projects

The most valuable engineering work creates reusable systems rather than isolated, one-off migrations.

02

Design for Rollback First

Every production cutover ships with a tested recovery path before it ships with a deadline.

03

Automation Reduces Operational Risk

Manual, repetitive steps are where migrations fail — automate provisioning, validation, and rollback out of human hands.

04

Reliability Before Velocity

Moving fast has no value if a 40TB cutover isn't safe to reverse.

05

Standardization Enables Scale

408+ clusters can't run on individual tribal knowledge — they run on shared, documented standards.

06

Measure Before Optimizing

Validation, checksums, and dashboards come before any performance or reliability claim.

07

Documentation Is Part of Engineering

A migration isn't finished until another engineer can run it without me in the room.

08

Own the Outcome

Ownership extends past cutover — into monitoring, incident response, and the next migration wave.

Featured Work

Case studies, not bullet points.

Four engineering programs that show the same pattern: standardize, automate, validate, then scale.

PostgreSQL → MySQL Migration Platform

Tech Lead for Tokopedia's PostgreSQL-to-MySQL migration program following the ByteDance acquisition — one of the company's largest database modernization initiatives.

Migration Architecture

Problem

  • Production ran on PostgreSQL while the post-acquisition platform standardized on MySQL, at a scale where dump-and-restore wasn't viable.

Engineering Decisions

  • Co-designed CDC-based migration architecture (Debezium → Kafka) instead of downtime-heavy bulk copies.
  • Separated validation from execution and designed rollback before cutover.
  • Served as a technical approver in Go/No-Go production decisions.

Architecture

  • Provisioning → CDC replication → validation → cutover → rollback, all standardized as reusable platform capabilities.

Migration Automation Framework

End-to-end automation for provisioning, validation, rollback, and monitoring — turning manual migration setup into a repeatable platform capability.

Automation

Problem

  • Manual migration setup consumed days per service and introduced inconsistency across engineers running the same steps.

Engineering Decisions

  • Standardized provisioning scripts and shared configuration across every migration wave.
  • Automated validation checkpoints and a rollback framework triggered by health checks.

Stack

  • Go and Python for automation, Terraform and Ansible for provisioning and deployment.

Overall migration speed

ByteNDB Migration & Cost Engineering

Led the migration off legacy managed RDS onto ByteNDB, removing a costly dependency while preserving production reliability.

Cost Engineering

Problem

  • Legacy RDS dependency carried high per-day infrastructure cost with limited architectural flexibility.

Engineering Decisions

  • Planned and executed migration onto ByteNDB, validated against real production workloads before cutover.

Outcome

  • Eliminated the legacy dependency entirely rather than resizing around it.

PCI DSS Compliance & Reliability Program

Delivered engineering work supporting PCI DSS compliance while sustaining 99.9%+ uptime across 400+ production databases through major traffic events.

Security & Compliance

Problem

  • Compliance requirements introduced operational and security constraints without an existing playbook at this scale.

Engineering Decisions

  • Collaborated directly with auditors and embedded compliance checks into standard operating procedures.
  • Improved monitoring, alerting, and backup validation across the fleet.

Outcome

  • Compliance became a property of the standard process, not a pre-audit scramble.

Migration Architecture

The lifecycle behind every safe cutover.

Every migration — from a single service to the full PSM program — moves through the same eight phases.

01

Discovery

Analyze application architecture, production risk, and migration complexity.

02

Architecture Design

Select migration strategy, define topology, design rollback, plan validation.

03

Infrastructure Provisioning

Provision migration infrastructure and configure CDC environments.

04

Migration Execution

Initial snapshot, CDC synchronization, and continuous data verification.

05

Production Validation

Schema, data, application, and performance validation before cutover.

06

Cutover

Switch production traffic and verify platform health in real time.

07

Rollback

Recover safely if required — protecting business continuity above all.

08

Post-Migration

Monitor, review operationally, and capture lessons learned.

Technical Leadership

Leadership through ownership, not hierarchy.

Technical leadership on the PSM migration program, expressed across six areas of ownership.

Architecture Ownership

Co-designed the migration architecture for Tokopedia's PostgreSQL-to-MySQL program as Technical Lead, working directly with Technical Architects on topology and provisioning strategy.

Engineering Standards

Established migration SOPs, validation standards, and rollback procedures adopted across the migration team.

Technical Mentoring

Mentored engineers, reviewed infrastructure pull requests, and assigned technical work across the migration effort.

Governance & Go/No-Go

Served as a technical approver for production migration Go/No-Go decisions, weighing risk against schedule for 40TB+ cutovers.

Cross-functional Collaboration

Partnered with Technical Architects on Terraform provisioning and Ansible deployment, and with ByteDance teams during post-acquisition platform evaluation.

Platform Enablement

Built reusable automation for provisioning, validation, and rollback that the wider migration team now runs independently.

"Technical leadership is not measured by the number of people reporting to you. It is measured by how many engineers become more effective because of the platforms, standards, and architectural decisions you create."
